Tour 8 - West Coast of the North West Highlands

Ullapool is a pretty and picturesque fishing village situated on the shore of Loch Broom on the north west coast of Scotland.

Your tour starts from Ullapool Pier from where we head in a southerly direction to Braemore Junction, We then take the A835 which sets off in a north westerly direction before curving around after a few miles to follow the coast south towards Gairloch.

Close to Baemore Junction there is a viewpoint with a spectacular view looking back down the glen towards Loch Broom and Ullapool.

There are several other viewpoints with spectacular views along the way including one overlooking Little Loch Broom and also at Gruinard Bay. As we approach Little Loch Broom, the massive bulk of An Teallach (one of Scotland's 282 Munros) can be seen to the left. Below is a view of the very beautiful Gruinard Bay. On the south shore of Gruinard Bay we pass through the intriguingly named settlements of First Coast and Second Coast.

After Gruinard Bay, the road goes inland for a few miles before reaching the coast again at Aultbea. Close to Aultbea is the Arctic Convoy Museum which is dedicated to telling the story of the brave servicemen and merchant seamen who endured severe Arctic weather conditions during World War II and in constant peril of enemy attack to deliver much needed munitions and aid to the Soviet Union. If time permits, we will stop for a visit to the museum.

A little further on from Aultbea we reach Inverewe Garden, a property run by the Scottish National Trust. This amazing botanical garden was created in 1862 by Osgood MacKenzie and features exotic plants from all over the world, benefiting from the effects of the Gulf Stream (North Atlantic Current).
